It’s Okay to Walk Away From a Math Problem

I’m so excited to share this manuscript with you all! I’ve told McIntyre’s story many times to lots of teachers, and it always amazes me how much it resonates for you all. Now his story exists in written form.

I hope you enjoy it, and I hope it convinces you to make this a part of your classroom culture.

This piece does NOT exist without the incredible support from two folx.

Kassia Wedekind helped me tell this story. We started this for a different project, and it ended up in Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching. I’m so grateful for her expertise in pushing me to tell this story so that y’all could feel what it’s like in my classroom. She is truly remarkable.

Claire Riddell is my wife and colleague, and she spent as much time with this piece as I did. Her countless re-reads, thoughtful suggestions, and overwhelming support in helping me share the brilliance that is McIntyre made this piece what it is. She is the best.
